Featured Species: Bubinga (African Rosewood)

Are you ready for something exotic? Let’s talk about Bubinga, or as many refer to it, African Rosewood.

Truthfully, there are a lot of different trees and wood species, even small plants, that people call African rosewood. So, if you are looking for African Rosewood lumber for your flooring, you are sure to get all kinds of variations in color and grain patterns. For this featured species article, we will specifically discuss wood from trees in the Guibourtia genus.

Bubinga facts

Location: Generally found in Central and Western Africa in places like Cameroon, the Ivory Coast, and Gabon.

Names: In addition to being called “African Rosewood,” it can also be known locally as kevazingo, eban, akume, essingang, buvenga, amazakone, ovang, okweni, and waka.

Size: Trees in the Guibourtia genus can grow up to 150 feet tall and be almost 6 feet wide.

Interesting fact: Bubinga can cause skin irritation in some people – so make sure you aren’t allergic to it before you install it as flooring!

Bubinga Uses

Bubinga has a wide variety of uses outside of the flooring industry. For example, it is often used in high-end furniture, boat building, and musical instruments.

Bubinga as Flooring

The color: As previously mentioned, African Rosewood can be any of several species, so the color can vary greatly. The darker heartwood can range from a pinkish tint to a dark red/brown with dark purple or black streaks. The lighter sapwood can have a lighter greyish-white, light yellow, or ivory color. Like many other exotic species, the colors tend to darken over time, especially with exposure to light. Some techniques can prevent or at least lessen this darkening process, but you’ll want to talk to your hardwood flooring specialist about your goals and whether or not those techniques would be cost effective.

You can also apply stains and finishes to this species, which it will take to rather nicely. However, it can take longer to dry than other wood species, so you’ll want to plan accordingly.

The grain: Generally, the grain is relatively straight with larger pores. However, Bubinga is known for its occasional striking patterns, including flaming, pomelle, quilting, waterfall, and mottle. The grain also has a natural luster, producing a gentle, reflective sheen or soft glow.

How it holds up: Bubinga is rather hard, ranking 2,410 on the Janka scale. For comparison, White Oak comes in at 1,360 on the Janka scale and is considered a durable hardwood. Because of its hardness, it can be challenging to install, requiring special equipment and fastening and cutting techniques. The silica in the wood can damage blades or drill bits, and because of the natural oils in the wood itself, glue can have a hard time adhering. It also requires additional steps when sanding and extra care to minimize scratch patterns.

A Brief History of Hardwood Flooring in America

Compared to other countries in the world, America is relatively young. So it is obvious that we do not own the market in the hardwood flooring industry. In fact, some might say that the French popularized hardwood flooring in the early 1600s, specifically King Louis XIII, during the construction of the Palace of Versailles. The Palace of Versailles is well known for the breathtaking parquet design in one of its main halls.

We did a recent project inspired by this pattern, creating what we call “Versailles panels.”

Even with our modern equipment, creating such a floor was a time-consuming and painstaking process. Imagine how much more difficult installing this kind of floor would be without the help of machines! Then imagine how much the human labor would cost. This reason alone is why generally only the wealthy could afford hardwood flooring, at least hardwood floors the way we would think of them today.

Wood floors have come in many shapes and varieties since ancient times, evolving as new technology became available. This is evident in almost any society, but all the more in America.

Some of the earliest European settlers in America would not have had the means to bring over building materials or equipment. Most would have had to use whatever resources the land they settled provided to them. One of the primary resources was timber.

Cleaning forested land so they could have farms and gardens resulted in a surplus of downed trees. Rather than wasting this valuable resource, many used it to build their homes. This resulted in what we know today as the log cabin. You can see some well-kept log cabins and other homesteads that were made this way in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Most of these log cabins had floors of beaten earth, which was the cheapest and least labor-intensive floor. Of course, you can imagine with a dirt floor that there were issues with insects, snakes, and other vermin. You can also imagine the difficulties when it rained, and you had to slosh through the mud inside your own home. To avoid this, some settlers made floors out of puncheon logs. These were logs split lengthwise and laid together with the flat sides up. Take a look at this video to learn more about puncheon log construction:

While this would undoubtedly be an upgrade from a bare dirt floor, puncheon log floors were still very different from the polished hardwood flooring we have come to know today. Because planks were hand-hewn, they had a rougher appearance and were often different sizes and widths. This resulted in gaps between the boards and an overall uneven surface to walk on.

Over time, flooring in log cabins and other homes in America became more sophisticated, with the edges of planks being cut so that they overlapped the planks beside them. This covered the gaps and allowed for more expansion/contraction, but the floors were still relatively uneven.

By the time of the late 19th century, the industrial revolution had, indeed, revolutionized the hardwood flooring industry in America. What had to be previously cut by hand could now be cut, planed, and shaped by a machine. This made the turnaround time much faster as well as made plank flooring more readily available to the average consumer. This was also the time that tongue-and-groove flooring gained in popularity. Basically, we can thank the industrial revolution for producing the polished type of hardwood flooring we are familiar with today.

Of course, the industrial revolution was not the end of the story. Modern advancements in technology have made production and installation much more efficient. Modern finishes have also increased the durability of hardwood flooring.

Which, speaking of finishes…

Before the use of polyurethane, many Americans would paint their floors much like you would paint a wooden wall. Doing this helped protect the floor, sealing it from moisture, and it also allowed the homeowners to freshen up the look of their rooms. Tired of looking at the same old room? Just paint the floor a different color, or maybe even paint a pattern or picture. Others used varnish and stains to protect and change the look of their floor.

Today there are many options, but the most frequently used are polyurethane and natural oil finish. Each type has its benefits, but we are huge proponents of natural oil finishes. You can read more about that in our blog post “European Oil / Natural Oil Wood Finish.”

So as you can see, hardwood flooring in America has had a few changes over the centuries. However, it remains a classic, timeless, and durable choice for many. We wonder what the next few centuries will hold for the hardwood flooring industry…

Featured Species: Brazilian Cherry

Our featured species this month is one that is sure to add that element of beauty to your home that you have been looking for. It is Brazilian Cherry.

Brazilian Cherry has been a popular choice for higher-end homes for many years, even though the popularity has waned in recent history. Some attribute this to the increase in popularity of other wood types taking over the market. This includes wood like White Oak, Red Oak, and Hickory. Others attribute the decline to decreased availability of solid hardwood planks due to over-harvesting in the Amazon, resulting in Brazilian Cherry being an endangered tree species. While certainly an understandable explanation, there is actually evidence to the contrary.

• The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) does not prohibit Brazilian Cherry from being purchased. If it were an endangered species, that would not be the case.
• It is not listed in the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, which indicates whether certain species are endangered and, therefore, protected.

• It has been categorized as a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.            

People mistakenly saying it is endangered is understandable due to the growing concern over the health of the Amazon Rainforest. However, for this specific species, it simply is not the case.

The Facts:

• Scientific name: Hymenaea courbaril
• Other names: Jatoba, Locust, Courbaril, and Stinking Toe
• Location: South America, Central America, and the Caribbean.
• Fun fact: The Brazilian Cherry tree is not really a cherry tree. It was named after the reddish tint of the wood itself. However, the tree is actually a legume species.
• Size: 100 to 130 feet high
• Uses: Flooring, furniture, woodworking, sap used for incense, perfume, and varnish
• Janka Rating: 2350

Another fun fact: It’s called Stinking Toe because the edible pulp surrounding the seed pods has a very unpleasant odor, and the pods are shaped like a toe.

As Flooring:

The wood itself features a rich color palette with red undertones. When it is freshly cut, the wood is a light pink color, but once it dries, and especially after it is finished, it darkens, creating the iconic Brazilian Cherry look. It also features an intricate grain pattern that adds a unique element to the floor and can include darker stripes down the length of the board.

Between the grain pattern and the variance in shades, this wood is a great choice to pair with other wood species. Here you can see where we paired it with a dark stained Hickory and included a transition piece to aid in the continuity of the floor throughout this home.

Brazilian Cherry, sitting toward the top of the Janka scale at 2350, is one of the hardest species of wood. Because of this, it is extremely durable and resistant to scratches, dents, and other damage. It is so hard due to the density of the fibers, and this density also makes it fire insect resistant as well.

Of course, while providing the above benefits, the density and hardness also pose some challenges for installation. Installing solid Brazilian Cherry requires special equipment and techniques to secure the planks to the subfloor. So, you’ll definitely want to hire a professional to install this type of flooring. If you just want to try your hand at a DIY project, you can buy engineered planks, which will be easier to install.

Something else to consider is that Brazilian Cherry produces a natural oil. This oil can also make installation more complicated since it will affect the adherence of any glues that are being used. However, the oil also kills mites and mold spores, resulting in an excellent option for anyone who suffers from allergies!

Another interesting fact about Brazilian Cherry is that it is naturally resistant to heat and the expansion/contraction that can occur with weather changes because of its density. Consequently, it is one of the top choices for installing over radiant heat flooring.

Although this species of hardwood can be relatively expensive, it certainly has its perks. By investing in this type of flooring, you enhance the value of your home and will have a floor that is durable and aesthetically pleasing for many years to come.

Deep Cleaning - A Wood Floor's Best Friend

One’s home should bring a feeling of peace and tranquility. Ensuring that each facet of your home is adequately cared for ensures that you always feel peaceful and happy with your living space. This includes your hardwood flooring.

Most of the time, one quickly sweeps and vacuums any spots where they see dust or grime. It is in almost everyone’s routine cleaning ritual. It is what one does to maintain a house of tidiness. Yet, when we speak of deep cleaning your hardwood flooring, we are talking about the buildup of dirt over time. A simple sweep or vacuum is unable to reach everything. Over time, dust and dirt particles can wear down a floor’s finish, so deep cleanings protect the surface.

Removing Stains on Hardwood Floors 

Sometimes, a job calls for a bit of elbow grease. One crucial piece of advice regarding hardwood cleaners…less is more. When one adds too much moisture to their hardwood floors, damage can occur over time, which we certainly strive to avoid. Therefore, when using hardwood cleaners, remember that the floor does not have to be soaked for the product to work. Again, less is more. 

Many people like to avoid using harsh chemicals in their households. Several fantastic environmentally friendly cleaners will cut through the grime and leave your floors looking beautiful. Some want to make their cleaner out of a vinegar mixture, but we do not recommend that as the vinegar is acidic and may make your hardwood brittle over prolonged use. 

Popular finishes for hardwood flooring include water-based polyurethane and oil finishes. Water-based polyurethane offers a quick drying time and a luminous finish. Tung and UV-cured oils are a few oil finishes people love to use. If you want to create a protective barrier against stains, hard wax oil is a fantastic option as it penetrates the wood. 

No matter the cleaning product, it is always wise to spot-test the cleaner before you use it on the entire floor. Proper research and spot cleaning ensure that your hardwood flooring is beautifully maintained 

Start by sweeping or vacuuming your space. If you choose to clean, ensure you are not using an attachment that may scratch your flooring.

Now that the dust and dirt are picked up, you want to wet mop. You will do this with warm water and a soft cleaning pad. Remember to be intentional about not using much water, as it can damage the flooring over time. 

At this point, you want to see if any spots require extra attention. If so, spot clean gently and wipe up any excess liquid or product with a dry soft towel.

Acclimating at the Mill

Did you know the most important step to installing hardwood flooring starts before the wood is on the installer’s truck? It actually begins at the sawmill, where the wood needs to go through a proper acclimation process before it comes to us. This is a crucial step, so it’s important to know the operation of your sawmill. Here at Auten Wideplank flooring, we know our providers’ processes well.

The importance of acclimating at the mill

While there is a process of acclimating the wood to a home or business, having the wood dried before it gets to that point is crucial. This drying process will allow the wood to be more workable and avoid some of the issues caused by too much moisture penetrating the wood fibers. These issues could include warping, twisting, buckling, crowning, and problems with installation. If the wood is dried correctly before it gets to the installation phase, contractors do not need to worry about these issues. They can focus on the last stage of acclimation, which is to acclimate the boards to your home or business. Then they can be installed with the proper sanding and finishing techniques to give you the gorgeous, long-lasting floor you desire.

How the wood is dried

While some sawmills might be finished after the planks have been cut, selling what is referred to as “green lumber” to box stores and contractors, many continue the process by drying the “green lumber.” First, they will stack the planks evenly with space between each board and let the stacks air dry for at least 120 days. Then they will take these stacks and place them in giant kilns. They heat these kilns, and the heat then dries the boards, removing the moisture content that the tree had absorbed before it was cut. The drying process usually involves numerous tests to ensure the boards are properly dried before being removed and sold to contractors. Drying wood planks in kilns also kills fungus and insects that might be living within or on the boards.

Conventional kilns will pipe hot air from a boiler that is generally heated by sawdust or some other by-product of the cutting process. This hot air will force the moisture out of the wood, which gets vented outside. This is the most common type of kiln. Another type of kiln that might be used is one that uses a dehumidification process. While similar to a conventional kiln, instead of venting the air, it will continually recycle the air within the chamber, forcing the moisture out of the planks to refrigeration coils, which turn the vapor into liquid. In this type of kiln, the moisture is removed as water instead of vapor.

It is helpful to know that every species of wood dries differently. And that is just one factor that can affect the drying time. Other factors include the plank’s thickness and the time it was air-dried before it was put into the kiln. To give you an idea of the length of the process: quarter-sawn white oak planks can take up to four months to dry in a kiln, while maple might only take two weeks.

A Cut Above the Rest

When it comes to hardwood flooring, one of the options you may be faced with is whether you want your planks to be live sawn, plain sawn, quarter sawn, or rift sawn. Each type of cut has its unique qualities. However, unless they work in the hardwood flooring industry, most people are not familiar with these terms or the differences. We want to introduce you to these different types of cuts and explain how they are different and what kind of flooring they are best used for.

So, as mentioned above, there are four basic ways of cutting hardwood flooring: live, plain, quarter, and rift.

As you can see from the diagram, grain patterns, board width, number of boards produced, and the amount of waste will be different between each type of cut.

Let’s take a deeper look at each kind:

Live Sawn

This is the oldest and most traditional way to cut a log into planks. You can trace this method of cutting back to some of the earliest shipbuilding techniques. It is also considered one of the most efficient ways to cut a log, being faster and resulting in less waste since the logs are cut directly through without having to be turned. Because the logs are cut straight through, there is a full range of grain variation, resulting in a truly unique grain pattern for each board. Additionally, this type of cut will produce planks that have both the darker heartwood and the lighter sapwood, resulting in a breathtaking contrast within each board.

Plain Sawn

This is the most common way of cutting a log, so it is what is more readily available when shopping for hardwood flooring. Because the log is cut so that there is no more than a 35-degree angle from the growth ring, the grain pattern ends up as what we refer to as “cathedral style.” This aesthetically pleasing pattern is what most people envision when they think about hardwood flooring. When it comes to waste, this way of cutting wood only produces slightly more waste than live sawn, so it is another good option in that regard.

Quarter Sawn

Being a more expensive way of cutting a log, this type of cut is generally used in furniture and hardwood flooring with thinner planks. As the name suggests, the log is cut lengthwise into quarters, producing four wedges. Because the wedges are cut at a right angle set to the center of the log, the boards will have a straighter grain pattern, generally be more water resistant, and produce more waste than plain sawn.

Rift Sawn

This type of cut is the most expensive and produces the most waste. Therefore, it is one of the least common cuts on the market. It is similar to quarter sawn, as you can see from the diagram, but wider boards are taken from the center of the tree. This results in grain patterns that are straight and tight, which makes the wood more stable, being more resistant to changes in temperature and humidity. If humidity is a concern in your area, rift sawn is a good option for you.

While each type of cut has pros and cons, we generally recommend live sawn when it comes to wide plank flooring. This is particularly true if you are installing white oak. Live sawn white oak is truly beautiful, complementing both a modern and rustic look and feel. #1. Horizontal Planks: the Classic Choice

When you think of hardwood flooring, this is probably the pattern you picture in your mind. Straight boards of equal width laid side by side. This is the most common wood floor design and one of the easiest to install. Just because it is one of the most common designs does not mean it is boring. You can create some of the most beautiful floors by choosing horizontal planks. 

#2. Herringbone Parquet: Geometric and Intriguing

This pattern can be traced back to Roman roads and has been used in many high-end homes since the 1500s. While installing hardwood can be a Do It Yourself project, installing flooring in a herringbone pattern should be left to the professionals. Even just the smallest amount off, and you can end up with an unwanted ripple effect. When done right, these floors are absolutely gorgeous!

#3. Chevron Parquet: Modern and Classy

Somewhat similar to the Herringbone pattern, a Chevron pattern is also an excellent option for those who want to add an extra level of visual appeal to their floor. Each board is cut at a 45-degree angle, which is the difference between chevron and herringbone, cut at a 90-degree angle. Overall a chevron pattern elicits a slightly more modern feel, even though it can be found in the Palace of Versailles! And speaking of Versailles…

#4. Versailles Parquet Panel: Something Unique

Another pattern found in the Palace of Versailles is one that takes its names from the palace itself: the Versailles Parquet! Ever since King Louis XIV of France had it installed, the Versailles Parquet has been the epitome of style and class. It is known to grab attention with its alternating grain and weave patterns. Many people will either use varying colors of stain within or different types of wood to create the contrast that highlights the intricacy of the design. Generally inlaid within a square panel, this pattern is most often found in older high-end homes and estates. Although, it is not a stranger to newer, modern homes.

#5 Inlaid Border: Mixing It Up

Finally, we have the inlaid border, which is a decorative pattern set into the surface of a wood floor. An inlaid border can be made from wood or other materials, but it often consists of different colors to create a visually appealing contrast. The pieces of the design are meticulously cut and put together, like a jigsaw puzzle. This can be done on-site, or you can purchase inlaid borders that have been pre-fabricated for a more cost-effective option. Whether you choose manufactured or built on-site, a wood floor with an inlaid border will undoubtedly be a conversation starter for years to come.
